Labor Day in Homer

Ran and I spent Labor Day weekend in Homer, Alaska with a group of our friends. We rented 2 cabins on a bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay. The weather could not have been better, which was so awesome since our summer has been really rainy and cloudy. There were blue skies and 70 degree temps during the day, low 60s at night, and clear for miles. This sunset picture was taken on Friday night from the front portch of our cabin- that's a volcano in the background, Mt. Illiamna.

This is another picture of a volcano visible from Homer (small one in the center) called Readout.

This was the view from our cabin.
On Saturday morning, the 10 of us took a kayak tour with True North Kayak (they were awesome!!) We took a 20 minute water taxi out of the Homer Spit area to a little island stocked with kayaks in Kachemak Bay.
Had to get a picture of the girls styling in our wader boots.
After a safety briefing, we all got geared up to get in our tandum kayaks. I had never been before, but Ran and I did great- I took this picture from our kayak! We launched first without a hitch!
The amazing thing about kayaking for the first time was (1) Homer is a beautiful city (2) Kachemak Bay is very calm water and (3) there is tons of wildlife!
This is called Elephant Rock. Our trip was about a half day long kayak around Yukon Island.
We got super close to this little otter, just resting on some seaweed and taking a bath.
We stopped at Seal Island for lunch- Mt. Illiamna is visible over our left shoulders. By this time in our trip, a seal had started following us and our guides in our kayaks!
It really was a nice suprise to have such great weather- we could see the volcanos from almost every point in our trip.

Ran and I were on cloud nine after an awesome day!
By the time we were on the water taxi back into Homer, everyone had their sailboats out to enjoy the beautiful holiday weekend.
We rounded out the weekend around the campfire with smores.
